Gr-egg-ory

In this collaboration for paper toys, my role involved orchestrating the creative vision, design elements, and production processes in close coordination with a team of designers. We created a paper toy instruction sheet where the toy itself was cut out and assembled following the printed instructions. Our focus was on making sure the design and instructions flowed seamlessly, ensuring they were clear and intuitive enough that even an elementary school student could easily follow along and put the toy together.

My Process

We began by individually sketching 20 different paper toy ideas. Afterward, we regrouped to compare our designs, identifying both similarities and differences. A common theme was food, specifically breakfast items. We ran off of this shared concept, where we landed on the name "Breakfast Buddies."

First round

For the first design round, we took a similar approach to the sketching phase. Each of us explored different designs independently, selecting elements we liked best. We ultimately chose the arms and legs I had developed but adjusted the colors to reflect a vintage breakfast aesthetic. Together, we created a cohesive title that would appear across all four spread layouts.

Additionally, we refined our instruction sheet to make it as simple and precise as possible. We wanted to ensure that even elementary school students could easily cut out and assemble the toys. To test its clarity, we had friends and family members attempt to follow the instructions. If an adult struggled with understanding or cutting, we knew a younger child would face even greater difficulties. This feedback allowed us to further refine the instructions for maximum accessibility.
