The Elements of Style
For this group design project, we created a series of three books using provided text. Our goal was to develop a cohesive design by using InDesign styles while collaborating on style guides and aesthetics. Each team member was responsible for designing one book, but it took a lot of teamwork to ensure all three books felt like part of the same series. We had to make sure elements such as typography, layout, and visual themes were consistent across all books while still allowing for individual creativity within each one.
My Process
This project heavily relied on communication and organization. Since we were working as a team, it was important to keep track of everyone’s roles and contributions. Early on, we divided responsibilities, and my role included designing the cover, creating the table style, and applying styles for the headers and introduction header. I was searched for a fun paper early in the process, which inspired the final design of the cover. Making sure each book followed the same general structure while still looking visually appealing required constant coordination among team members.
Creating a guide
Before diving into individual book designs, we started by working on one book together to develop a style guide. This guide served as a foundation for the entire series, ensuring consistency in typography, margins, spacing, and other design elements. Having this reference made it easier for each of us to apply the same styles across our individual books while maintaining a unified look for the entire collection.
Laying things out
Once we had our initial designs ready, we came together for a group review. This first round of refinement was where we carefully examined our layouts, found inconsistencies, and made necessary adjustments to better align with our style guide. It was a chance to fine-tune the small details and make sure everything looked polished. After addressing any issues, we finalized each of our books and added the covers, successfully creating a cohesive three-book series.
